Cooperative societies role in fertilizer operation and distribution (1998-2001) in Tigray Region

Tigray region has a total area of 5.2 million hectares. Its population size as of 1998/99 is estimated 3.59 million of which 83% are rural and entirely depending on agriculture for subsistence and employment. During the past 30 years attempts were made in the region to organize the farmers into cooperatives with a purpose of supplying farmers the essential commodities, input and marketing their products, but they were not successful. However, in line with proclamation No. 85/95 and No. 147/98, Tigray regional government has established Agricultural Cooperatives Promotion Office (ACPO) in 1996 and Tigray Cooperatives Promotion Office (TCPO) has made great effort to restructure and promote cooperatives with this effort the cooperatives society is growing highly. As a result in 2001 there are 559 cooperatives, out of which 459 are registered, 37 are restructured and 513 are multipurpose service cooperatives. The main objectives of cooperatives in the region is to supply farmers with improved technologies, marketing outputs and eliver credit service. In this regard the number of cooperatives participating in input distribution are increasing from year to year.
