The activities of enzyme responsible of carbon and nitrogen metabolism, and the contents of amino acids, were measured on extracts of nodule cytosol from common bean inoculated with Rhizobium tropici CIAT899 and grown under various NaCl concentrations. The inhibition of nitrogenase activity by salinity was highly correlated with that of the assessed enzymatic activities, and with the contents of the nodule with nitrogen compounds. These parameters were more sensitive to NaCl than plant growth and nodulation. It is concluded that in this Phaseolus vulgaris cultivar, the limitation of nitrogen fixation efficiency by salinity is due to nitrogenase activity and the nitrogen assimilation process within nodules
