Wine grape breeding programme based on Eurasian varieties and its results
2002
Hajdu, E.
In Hungary an organized cross breeding of Vitis vinifera L. varieties began in 1950 with the aim to improve yield reliability and quality of ordinary wine grape varieties grown on large areas. New varieties could be developed which kept the adaptibility of their parentes combined with erliness, frost and winter tolerance, which increases yield reliability, and had better quality traits (high sugar yield, fine acidity, taste). During the programme 18 wine grape varieties were released and their values tested in trials of several years under different environmental conditions. Growers were kept informed of their performance. Today virus-tested basic vineyards of the new varieties are available for propagation.
