Bebre, G. (Priekuli Plant Breeding Station (Latvia))
The breeding of new potato variety is a result of experiments and analysis of many years of duration. The aim of breeding was to develop potato varieties adapted to Latvian agroecological conditions, suitable to meet different consumer requirements, and resistant to most widespread potato diseases and pests. Variety traits were the most important factor successful production realization. The variety 'Unda' was bred by hybridisation method in Priekuli Plant Breeding Station. The hybrid 83-147.4 was selected in 1985. During 1999 to 2001 the potato 'Unda' was investigated in the three State Variety Testing Departments in Latvia, during 2000 to 2001 DUS - test in Poland. The average yield obtained in comparative trials (1989-1998) was 44,3 t ha*[-1), starch content 18.1%, starch yield 6.2 t ha*[-1). New medium late - late potato 'Unda' is suitable for food (BC type) and processing in pommes frites. Variety is resistant to wart, relatively resistant to potato late blight. Variety 'Unda' is suitable for organic farming. 'Unda' is included in the Latvian Catalogue of Plant Varieties in 2003. Priekuli Plant Breeding Station is the owner of plant - breeding rights.
