Alfalfa (Medicago sp.) being high yielding and high quality legume is very interesting for Latvian farmers. Mainly foreign alfalfa varieties are grown in Latvia. Winterhardiness (WH) of variety is the first characteristic to evaluate if one has to grow alfalfa varieties bred in other regions of the Earth. The rating system to characterize WH in a year-old nursery was carried out in the USA in 1980ties (McCaslin, 1994). WH rating system is based on a (1-5) scale, with the highest scores representing the less WH, and according to this alfalfa varieties are subdived into 6 winterhardiness groups. The aim of our investigations was to prove the possibility to use standard test under Latvia's conditions, and to determine the values of winterhardiness (WH) indexes for alfalfa varieties suitable for growing in Latvia. Using WH rating system we evaluated 31 alfalfa varieties in Study and Research Farm "Vecauce" of the Latvia University of Agriculture during three winters (1999-2002) on strongly altered by cultivation clay loam soils.
