The farmer-led corn R & D [research and development] activity is a pro-poor community-based research conducted in marginal corn areas in Region 10 [Northern Mindanao, Philippines] which was implemented in July 1998 to Dec 2002. The project valued both farmer and scientific ways of "knowing" and effectively integrating them to generate new knowledge for efficient production and management decisions. It aimed to improve the rural income of upland farmers by promoting community-based technologies for sustainable agricultural development. The participatory approach process was applied where farmers are active participants to come-up with the Community Development Plan (CDP), which was the basis in packaging action research proposals with farming systems approach. A counterparting and rollover scheme was instituted to ensure sustainability of the project. The project posted significant social and economic growth as follows: 1) increase in corn production from 1.2-5.25 mt/ha with net income from P800-P26,395/ha was attained due to the adoption of the technology; 2) empowerment and better decision-making capabilities among the farmer-partners were evident because of their active and full participation at all levels of the project implementation; and 3) promoted better and stronger linkage among DA-RFU 10, the LGUs [local government units] and other institutions intervening in the community. Generally, the project had given a positive impact towards the community members in terms of agricultural productivity, income and degree of participation
