Assessment of insect communities in Bt- and non Bt-corn from Carulay, Echague, Isabela [Philippines]: wet season
2002
Reyes, S.G. (Philippines Univ. Los Banos, College, Laguna (Philippines))
The insect community structure, species diversity and guild structure were assessed for each stage of corn development for wet season trial at Carulay, Echague and Isabela sites. Two isolines of Bt-corn, two isolines of non-Bt-corn (treated and untreated) and a commercial hybrid were used as treatments and insects were sampled using sweep net. Species diversity was measured using Margalef's index and the indices among treatments were not significantly different at 5% level of significance. Different guilds such as phytophagous, detrivores, predators and parasitoids were also not significantly different among treatments. Changing dominance structures of insects among treatments in relation to temporal development of the insect communities were characterized and tracked, with leafhoppers and planthoppers relatively more abundant than other insect species. Species abundance data follows the geometric series model and the fit of the data to the model was tested using the mathematical test of May (1975)
