Studies on the effectiveness of conventional fungicides on the growth of Fusarium lini bolley causing linseed wilt

Linseed wilt caused by Fusarium lini causes a serious wilt disease of linseed varieties resulting in appreciable losses wherever the crop; is grown. Survey of five different places of Larkana region was conducted to find out the intensity and collect the linseed plants showing wilting symptoms. The highest infection percentage 34% was found in Kambar Ali Khan. However, the prevalence of the disease in the fields survey was 27.8% averagely. Isolations were done from the roots of wilted linseed plants Fusarium lini Bolley was isolated and identified according to is typical conidial morphology. Pathogenicity test of Fusarium lini was conducted in pots with sterilized soil. The fungus was found to be highly pathogenic from artificially inoculated plants. Soil amended with fresh inoculums of the fungus reduced the germination of the plants by 59% as compared to control. Three fungicides viz., Dithane M-45, Baytan and Vitavax were tried to see their effect on linear colony growth of the fungus in vitro. Baytan significantly reduced the linear colony growth of the Fusarium lini at its lower doses followed by Dithane M-45. The highest doses of all the fungicides were more affected in checking the growth of the fungus than lowest and moderate doses. These fungicides were also used to see their effect on the development of the linseed plants. The pots filled with sterilized soil were inoculated thoroughly with culture of Fusarium lini, and fungicides applied at different concentrations. All fungicides significantly controlled the fungus and enhanced the plant development as compared with control (no fungicides). Baytan gave excellent disease control and increased the plant height at a rate of 50 mg/250 gm seeds, and rate as high as 100-mg/250 gm as compared to other fungicides.
