The present study was carried out to investigate the growth and yield performance of different canola varieties comparison with mustard variety S-9 under Hyderabad conditions, at Student's Farm, Department of Agronomy, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam during Rabi 1998- 99. Six canola varieties (Hyola-420, Rainbow, Hyola-42, Wester Shirallee and S-9 (Check) were sown in a randomized complete block design, replicated three times. The plot size was maintained at 3.5 m*3.0 (10.50 m-2). The observations were recorded on various growth and yield components (Plant height, number of branches and capsules per plant, days to flowering and maturity, seed yield per plot and per hectare). Plant Height: Canola variety Hyola-42 produced maximum height (210 cm), followed by Rainbow and S-9 (check), with plant height of 201.67 cm and 197 cm, However, the minimum plant height (191.33 cm) was observed in case variety Wester. The differences were statistically highly significant. Number of branches per plant: Varieties Wester and Shirallee produced highest number of branches 10.50 and 10.47 per plant, followed by varieties S-9 and Hyola-420 with 9.94 and 9.58 number of branches per plant respectively. However, the minimum number of branches 8.65 per plant was recorded in case of variety Rainbow. The differences, however, were statistically highly significant. Number of capsules per plant: Variety Shirallee produced maximum 692.67 mean number of capsules per plant, while S-9 and Wester ranked second and third with 617 and 600 capsules per plant respectively. Hyola-42 produced 545 capsules, and the minimum capsule (503) per plant was recorded in case of variety 420. Statistically, highly significant differences were recorded. Number of days taken to flowering Variety S-9 (Check) took flowering earlier (64 days), while varieties Wester, Shirallee and Rainbow followed S-9 and took flowering in 83, 87 and 87 days. variety Hyola-420 significantly delayed flowering and took 93 days statistically the differences were highly significant within varieties. Number of days taken to maturity: Variety S-9 (Check) matured earlier 133 days, as compared to Wester 139 days, followed by Rainbow and Shirallee, with 150 and 151 days respectively. Delayed maturity was observed in varieties Hyola-420 and Hyola-42 with 153 and 154 days. Seed yield per plot: Variety Shirallee produced significantly greater seed yield of 2.72 kg/plot, followed by Wester with seed yield of 2.72 kg and check variety S-9 (2.65 kg). Variety Hyola-42 produced seed yield of 2.26 kg/plot, while the lowest (2.04 kg/plot) by Hyola-420. Seed yield per hectare: Variety Shirallee produced significantly maximum seed yield of 2650 kg/ha followed by Wester (2592 kg) and S-9 (2528 kg/ha). Variety Hyola- 42 produced yield of 2156/ha while the lowest yield of 1943 kg/ha was obtained under Hyola-420.
