Important macro and micro elements of wheat and rice

Important macro and micro-elements of different genotypes of wheat and rice were studied. Highest amounts (mg/100g) of macro-elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg and P) were recorded in Iqbal-99 (26.23), Shahkar-95 (680.79), Pasban-90 (85.5), Auqab-99 (199.2) and MH-97 (279.27) wheat cultivars respectively; and in NIAB- Irri-9 (15.10), EF-25-14-98 (270.85), EF-30-1-97A (39.01), Irri-6 (34.94) and Basmati-Pak (246.20) rice genotypes, respectively. Maximum concentrations (mg/100g) of Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu were found in Auqab-99 (4.87), Rahtas-90 (3.55), Auqab-99 (2.49), and Punjab-96 & Kohistan-97 (0.69) wheat varieties, respectively; and in DM-25-11-96 (5.72), EF-25-14-98 (3.27), EF-35-2-98 (0.79) and Basmati-370 and BC-L-68 (0.41) rice genotypes, respectively. Correlations between protein content and different minerals in wheat and rice were not significant. Coefficient of variability (CV %) in different elements varied from 3.24 (Mn) to 25.74 (Ca) in wheat and from 6.11 (P) to 18.15 (Ca) in rice. The superiority of field fortification of staples for minerals over that of post harvest addition is discussed.
