The effect of five degrees of the compation of a loess soil ranging from 1.10 to 1.50 Mg per cubic m on the development and yields of spring barley and on the distribution of root system in the soil profile were studied. The optimum soil bulk density was determined based on the response of spring barley. Within the studied range, the optimum value of soil bulk density for the growth and yielding of spring barley and for development of its root system is 1.40 Mg per cubic m
