Productivity and feeding value of lucerne-grass mixtures grown for grazing

The results showed that in the first year of grazing the mixture of alfalfa cv. Szentesi Rona with timothy was the best yielder of dry matter, protein and energy units. In the second year of grazing the combination of alfalfa cv. Luzelle with orchard grass was the best performer. The proportion of alfalfa in the sward strongest affected the digestibility and protein content of the herbage. In the second year of grazing digestibility, protein content and yields of energy units per 1 ha decreased due to domination of grasses in the sward. The yield of energy units was much higher in the first year of grazing than in second. It was more depended on the yields of dry matter than on chemical composition of the mixtures
