Group housing of sows: effects on performance and management
1998
Brooks, P.
The decision of the UK government to ban sow stalls has focussed British producers minds on the need to develop alternative housing systems for sows. This paper argues that a housing system for moderm, highly productive sows must minimize agonistic encounters and must provide the opportunity for sows to be fed and rationed individually. Only by doing this can their genetic /biolog cal potential be realized. A number of housing systems can provide acceptable results. However, only a system of housing in which sows are fed with Electronic. Sow Feeders provides the opportunity for individual treatment of sows. Examples are given of the ways in which building design and layout can influence the effectiveness of the system
