The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of nitrogen fertilization on nitrogen nutrition status of plants during vegetation period, grain yield, yield components and malting quality of spring barley. The nitrogen dose of 40 kg N per ha supplied before sowing ensured optimal nitrogen nutrition status (NNI=1) estimated according to brewery norm of protein content in grain (10.5-11.5 percent) and grain yield equal 92 percent of that obtained on dose of 80 kg N per ha
