Selected traits of Polish pedigree pigs - progress in the carcass meat deposition and meat quality

Current status of Polish pedigree pig herds in presented showing important changes occurring in the meat content of carcass over the last decade. In 1994, at a slaughter weight of 100 kg the weight of primary cut meat amounted to 20 kg in a carcass-side, irrespective of the breed. In 2001, in the two most common breeds, Polish Large White (PLW) and Polish Landrace (PL), the respective values reached 22.4 and 22.9 kg. Moreover, in 1994, only a small part of performance-tested pigs could be qualified as class E on the basis of carcass meat deposition, while in 2001 as much as 69.6 percent PLW and 79.1 PL gilt carcasses were E-graded
