The effect of locality and sowing terms on the content of some elements in chickpea seeds (Cicer arietinum L.)

Research studies were conducted in 1999 and 2000 at Garlica Murowana near Cracow and Felin near Lublin. They aimed at defining the effect of the locality and sowing terms on the content of: K, Ca, Mg, P, and Fe in the seeds of two chickpea cultivars. The cultivars of chickpea used in the study belonged to two different types: desi type - Myles and kabuli type - Sanford. The amount of potassium in the seeds of Sanford remained on a level between 5719 and 15184 mg/kg d.m. and in the case of Myles between 5910 and 14514 mg/kg d.m. In 1999 the seeds planted on plots located near Cracow contained twice as much potassium as those planted near Lublin. In 2000 this tendency was no longer so evident. The Sanford seeds contained between 359 and 623 mg/kg d.m. of calcium, whereas those of the Myles between 533 and 608 mg/kg d.m. Plant material from particular sowing terms and localities differed considerably with respect to the content of this element. Chickpea seeds were found to be a good source of magnesium (Sanford 1412-2096 mg/kg d.m., Myles 1437-1800 mg/kg d.m.). The seeds planted in the vicinity of Cracow were richer in magnesium. The sowing date had a significant, but not evident effect on the level of this element in the seeds. The amount of phosphorus found in the Sanford seeds ranged from 3412 to 3869 mg/kg d.m. and in the Myles from 3546 to 3863 mg/kg. In the second year of the study no significant differences in the content of this element were found between the seeds of the two studied cultivars obtained at various cultivation terms from two localities. In 1999 more phosphorus was found in the seeds obtained from experimental plots located near Cracow. Chickpea is a good source of iron (Sanford 66.3-146.5 mg/kg d.m., Myles 62.5-116.3 mg/kg d.m.). The seeds of plants cultivated on localities near Cracow were richer in that element. The results obtained show that the locality of cultivation was the main factor deciding about the content of: K, Ca, Mg, P, and Fe in chickpea seeds
