Unlike other species of the Solanaceae family, pepper was a recalcitrant species with regard to its capacity to in vitro regeneration. In many cultivars of pepper, the regeneration was reported via organogenesis of shoot buds from cotyledons and hypocotyl explants, anther culture, somatic embryogenesis and via protoplast culture. However, plant regeneration in the pepper is limited to formation of distored buds or shoot-like structures that do not produce the normal shoots. Pepper is susceptible to fungal and viral pathogens. One of the solutions to this problem is the development of pathogen-resistant pepper varieties using genetic transformation techniques. Development of an efficient plant regeneration procedure is the first step in optimizing a transformation system
