The study was carried out during 1998-2000 on Gala trees on P 60 rootstock planted in autumn 1992 at spacing 3.5 x 1.25 m on sandy loam soil. Hand-thinning of fruitlets was carried out annually after June Drop to achieve 30, 60 or 90 fruitless per tree. In the experiment it was shown that, under Polish conditions the optimum number of Gala fruit per tree at a planting density of 2286 trees per ha ranged from 60 to 90. At this range of fruit numbers per tree, the yield is relatively high (20-30 t/ha) and the fruit have low sensivity to bitter pit and, probably, to other Ca-related disorders as well
