Nota
Livestock production on the small farms of the Valley areas of Bolivia depends on feed availability, especially forages and crop residues, which is determined by seasonal rainfall and the possibility of irrigation. As the area seeded to forage crops is small, the sub-products of the cereal crops, including maize and the small-grain cereals, are important sources of animal feed. Farmers possess various livestock species, including cattle, horses and donkeys, sheep and goats, pigs and birds. Livestock may be divided into two groups: confined or stabled animals, fed with grain, crop residues and forages, and pastoral species, sheep and goats, that depend on the natural pasture and crop stubble. The increase in the populations of these pastoral species, especially sheep, has resulted in severe over-grazing and a progressive degradation of the soil and the natural pasture. Despite their inherent low digestibility, the cereal sub-products are an important source of feed for the confined species, especially the cattle. Treatment of these feed sources, including hay, straw and maize husks, with urea increases their digestibility and protein value. The paper presents recommendations for future interventions and programs to increase the productivity of the small farm livestock sector.
