Effects of some botanicals and other materials against the maize weevil (Sitophilus Zeamais Motsch.) on stored maize

Experiments were conducted in the laboratory and storehouse between 1995 -1997, to examine the efficacy of over 20 botanicals and other materials as protectants of shelled maize against the maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais Motsch.) at the Bako Research Center, Western Ethiopia. Weevil susceptible maize variety 'Gutto' (in the first) and hybrid 'BH-140' (in the subsequent experiments) were used. The amounts of grain used were 150 9 per jar and 1.5 kg per cloth bag for the laboratory and storehouse experiments, respectively. Each treatment was replicated four times and arranged in completely randomized design. Among the different botanicals tested, Chenopodium protected maize from weevils. It caused high adult weevil mortality, reduced progeny emergence and low percent grain damage similar to the standard insecticide pirimiphos-mthyl. Treat-ments such as eucalyptus leaf, pepper tree leaf, datura leaf, endod seed, tomato leaf, wood ash and saw dust also caused high adult weevil mortality after 7 days of treatment application. Termite mound soil also caused a remarkable adult mortality. The overall result indicated that Chenopodium is very promising biopesticide, whereas other treatments such as neem, datura seed, pepper tree, endod, and woodash are also potentially useful to protect stored grains from maize weevil.
