The article discusses the results of monitoring of social and economic changes that took place in the rural areas over the period of four to five years. The social and economic analysis is focused on four problem areas, namely changes in population, labour market changes, economic welfare, and infrastructure changes. The proposals include measures for rural development after accession into the EU
