[Using parent material with various duration of vegetative period in heterosis breeding of maize]
2001
Duda, O.M. (Institute of Grain Farming, Dnipropetrovsk (Ukraine))
The possibility to obtain high-yielding maize hybrids being developed from the breeding lines which vary as to duration of vegetative periods thereof is studied. Heterosis models which can be used to develop high-yielding maize hybrids are presented. The effect of each germ-plasm on performing economically valuable characteristics in the hybrids is analysed. A number of high-yielding hybrids are isolated which give crop yields at the level of domestic hybrids standards and the best hybrids of foreign breeding. The parent plants served as a basis to prove the possibility of breeding hybrids with more complicated genetic structure. A yield-forecasting method, in particular that of Jenkinson, is analysed
