Under agroecological conditions of the Zemun Polje, Serbia (Serbia&Montenegro), on the slightly calcareous chernozem soil, trials were conducted to determine the effect of different maize growing systems on the resistance of the soil to penetration. The resistance of the soil to penetration depends on: growing systems, the period of vegetation and the depth analyzed. The lowest values of the resistance to penetration were obtained in two field crop rotation system, maize-winter wheat and three field crop rotation system, whereas the highest values were found in monoculture. The resistance to penetration is greater with depth and in the final period of vegetation. The lowest values were in the favourable 1991.
