On the barren soil spoil banks of the "Kolubara" open cast mine, Serbia (Serbia&Montenegro), sussess has been achieved in recultivation with forest and agricultural crops without the so-called humusing, namely the application of a thin humus layer. The examination of the principal agrochemical and microbiological properties has been performed, as well as that of the quantity of physiological groups of microorganisms in deposols of different ages and under various agricultural crops. The examined deposols have shown a more favourable pH compared to the control soil, a lower humus content, the total potassium and readily available K2O, and a greater content of the readily available P2O5. Compared to the control soil, the deposols have shown less of the total microflora, fungi and Clostridium, whereas other physiological groups of microorganisms are more present.
