The objective of this paper has been to assess the effect of the chemical characteristics and contents of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in the soil on the population size of different groups of microorganisms in the soil under potatoes. Chemical analyses have shown that two soil types dominated the production fields of Maglic Agricultural Farm in Maglic (Serbia, Serbia&Montenegro): chernozem on loess and loess-like sediments, dealkalized, gleyed and medium deep, and chernozem on loess and loess-like sediments, calcareous, gleyed and medium deep. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd obtained for the analyzed production fields were below the maximum allowed concentrations (MAC) permitted by law. The calculated correlation coefficients showed that there was no high dependence between the contents of heavy metals on one side and the population sizes of the examined groups of microorganisms on the other (r 0.50). Based on the results of chemical and microbiological analyses and the contents of Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd in the soil, production fields T-1, T-4, T-5/2 and T-9 were estimated as suitable for cultivation of potatoes intended for processing into high-value food.
