The plant cover of saline sites in the riparian zone of the Rusanda aquatorium has specific characteristics which are floristic (125 species, 8 subspecies, 4 varieties, 7 forms and 1 lusus), plant geographic (2 endemes and 3 subendemes of the Pannonian Plain) and phytocoenological nature (3 classes, 4 orders, 5 alliances, 11 associations and 6 subassociation). The intensive extinction of stenovalent plants and degradation of the registered plant communities are primarily due to water shortage and ever-increasing anthropic influence. It is planned, "based on preliminary survey and evaluation, to define the status, area and protection measures" (Area Plan of the Republic of Serbia, 1996) for this authentic landscape unit by 2010.
