Heavy metals are common pollutants in urban and industrial soils due to their emissions from industrial plants, thermal power stations, vehicles exausts, etc. While entering the terrestrial and aquatic environment in the emission region as well as far away from them, heavy metals accumulate in soil and water reservoirs creating serious problems. The aim of the work was to determine the total content of Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd, As, Pb, and Mn in soil and sediment samples collected in January 2001 from several sites in the Novi Sad town. Average contents of the metals were compared with literature data and limited values according to the Yugoslav legislation in order to reveal actual state of heavy metal pollution.
