Growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) on dunes of Southwest Estonia related to climate
2003
Paern, H. (Estonian Agricultural University, Tartu (Estonia). Forest Research Institute)
Dendrochronological techniques and correlation analysis were used to compare the radial growth of pines and to identify relationships between climatic variables and radial growth of trees at different slope positions of dunes. The two sites selected for this study are located in the region of dunes in Southwest Estonia. The climate-growth relationships were studied for young and old Scots pines. Analysis revealed that no obvious regularity exists between the radial growth of pines on the top and at the foot of the dunes. As a rule, young pines grew better at lower positions. The average tree-ring width of older trees generally increased from the foot towards the top of the dune
