Forests on dunes in Southwest Estonia
2003
Paern, H. (Estonian Agricultural University, Tartu (Estonia). Forest Research Institute)
The nature of forests growing on dunes in Southwest Estonia was investigated. The study area is located along the Paernu-Riga highway and is restricted by the settlement of Uulu in the north and by the Rannametsa River in the south. In order to describe the forests and stand parameters in the study area the mensuration descriptions of stands made during the forest inventory were used. Pine stands are dominating on dunes. Characteristic of the dune area are single-species pine stands and a large proportion of stands of high age among them. The proportion of the stands of other tree species is considerably smaller. A variety of site types occurred in the investigated area. Most forests belonged to the Cladonia, Rhodococcum and Myrtillus site types. Humid habitats in the interdunal depressions are characterised by paludified forests. Pine undergrowth was most widely distributed in Cladonia and Rhodococcum site types, spruce undergrowth predominated in the Myrtillus site type. Undergrowth of birch, oak and maple was observed as well. Spruce trees in different stands were damaged by mooses and by annosum root rot. Rhizina root rot affected pines on dry sites
