Biodiversity is one of the key components of our basic life support system. Biodiversity is now the sovereign property of the nation in whose political frontiers it occurs. The Global Biodiversity assessment published in 1995 by UNEP warns, 'unless actions are taken to protect biodiversity we will lose forever the opportunity of reaping its full potential benefit to humankind. Complementary conservation is the application of a range of conservation techniques (including ex situ and in situ) to conserve the target taxon, one technique acting as a backup to another.
