Some Factors Affecting Semen Characteristics and Scrotal Circumference of Damascus Bucks
2000
Al-Ghalban, A.M.
This study was conducted at Walla Agriculture Research Station/ Jordan. Scrotal circumference and semen characteristics were assessed using 38 bucks of which 17 were matures and 21 were yearlings. Body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS) and scrotal circumference were recorded once a month for a period of one year. Semen was collected using electorejaculator. Semen measurements included ejaculate volume (EV), ejaculate appearance (EA), mass motility (MM), forward motility (FM), sperm concentration (SPC), total sperm per ejaculate (TSE), abnormal sperm percentage (ASP) and viable sperm concentration (VSC). Mature bucks weighed more (P0.001) than yearlings and had significantly larger (P,0.001) scrotal circumference. Sperm concentration, total sperm per ejaculate and viable sperm concentration were (P0.05) higher in mature bucks. Abnormal sperm percentage was lower (P0.05) in mature bucks. Other semen characteristics were not affected by age (P0.1). /bCS had only a little effect (P0.1) on body weight. Whereas, scrotal circumference and semen characteristics were not affected by BCS.
