Piirsalu, M. (Estonian Ministry of Agriculture, Tallinn (Estonia))
The regression of poultry breeding in the Baltic States began in 1992-1993. The critical situation in this branch formed as a result of sharp price increase of fodder, energy sources, also because of the imports of the poultry products at the dumping price. Then the number of poultry decreased rapidly and the uncontrollable import of poultry products started into this country. Poultry meat production increased in 2002. The Estonian poultry meat output in 2002 was 11.500 tonnes. In 2001 was 9.200 tonnes, of which Tallegg Ltd produced 80%. The relative share of poultry meat in the total meat production was 19% in 2002. The best breeding material meat hen crosses are used Ross-208. Total egg production was 247.3 million in 2002.
