Papaya ranks seventh in importance among the commercial fruits grown in the Philippines. Papaya production is confronted with serious pest and diseases wherein Papaya Ringspot Virus (PRSV) is one of the major disease. In Mindanao, where majority of the papaya fruits for export is produced, the disease was first detected in the later part of 1999 in some municipalities of south Cotabato and Davao. Further survey was conducted to determine the incidence of PRSV in Mindanao strain identification of the PRSV isolate present in the area was also conducted. This was done by serological testing and transmission experiments. Results of survey show that PRSV is present in the municipalities of South Cotabato, General Santos, Sarangani, Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte and Misamis Oriental. The disease observed in Mindanao has a typical symptoms compared to the Luzon isolate, which infects both Solo and Cavite type. The strain present in Mindanao is the PRSV-P type as evidenced by both mechanical and aphid transmission and serology
