Socioeconomic impact of environment and natural resources training programs to upland farmers in Benguet [Philippines]

The socioeconomic profile of respondents and adoptors of DENR-ERDS-CAR [Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Ecosystems Research and Development Service-Cordillera Administrative Region, Philippines] training programs, benefits/impacts of training programs to the community, and users'/adoptors' reasons for nonadoption of environment and natural resources (ENR) technologies disseminated through trainings were determined. The study covered five barangays [villages] in Benguet: Gumatdang, Itogon; Camps 1, 2, and 3, Tuba; Ampucao, Itogon; Talloi Sur, Tuba; and Philex Mining Corp., Pacdal, Tuba. Several technologies such as bamboo propagation, fruit processing, solid waste management, nursery establishment, soil and water conservation measures, hollow blocks making, tilapia culture, and tiger grass propagation were disseminated through trainings. Findings showed that most of the trainers were relatively young with mean age of 38. Most were members of an organization, have stayed in the area since birth, and considered farming as their primary source of income. Almost half of the respondents desired their children to finish college. Some of the reasons for the low adoption of technologies were nonreceptiveness to the technology, nonapplicability to the area, and not a priority activity because there was no immediate economic benefits derived
