Bacterial stalk rot (BSR) and fungal ear rot (SER) caused by Erwinia chrysanthemi and Stenocarpella macrospora, respectively, are important corn diseases in the Philippines. Developing varieties with favorable reaction to these diseases require resistant germplasm. Using a virulent and prevalent strain of BSR and the stab inoculation method, ~ 300 elite yellow inbred lines were evaluated for BSR resistance beginning in the 2001 wet season. After three seasons of evaluation, the project will release four inbred lines - Pi 52, 53, 54 and 55 - that have adequate resistance to BSR. Evaluation for SER resistance using corn husk as substrate identified six inbred lines with resistance to ear rot. Evaluation of other lines both for BSR and SER is still on going. The Pi together with some CIMMYT [Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de Maiz y Trigo] Asia (CA) lines that also exhibited resistance will be used to develop broad-based BSR resistant synthetics in the 2003 dry season. The Pi lines and subsequently any germplasm that would be developed will be available to any interested company or individual
