Village-level technologies on crop, nutrient, and pest management in a direct-seeded rice community in Bucac, Bayugan, Agusan del Sur [Philippines]

Problems in the locality were: Lack of drying facility (29%); high stem borer infestation (26%); high seed price (25%); high fertilizer price (8%); water supply deficiency during the DS [dry season] (6%); high interest rates of loaned money (3%); high golden apple snail damage, and high reduction of sold palay during rainy season (1%). With ecological farming as a solution to high fertilizer price, CRH [carbonized rice hull] and banana peelings (industrial wastes in the community) were processed into organic fertilizers using EM [effective microorganisms] as compost starter. Farmer-cooperators had hands-on experience on making organic fertilizer using indigenous materials, and they were given 6 kg rice seeds for multiplication. MOET (minus one element technology] saw N as the limiting nutrient, although use of inorganic fertilizer attained the five tons/ha target. Use of CRH as soil conditioner resulted in slightly higher yield than farmers' fertilizer rates. Field evaluation was done in Los Angeles, Butuan City, and Agusan del Norte using Mestizo 1. Before the application of the treatments, T1-Funguran, T2-BLB [bacterial leaf blight] stopper, T3-Kocide, T4-Multi-purpose detergent (MPD); T5-EM and T6-Untreated Control; BLB severity caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae did not differ. At seven days after application, BLB was significantly lower in treated fields than in the control, except for EM-treated fields. At 10 days before harvest, Funguran, Kocide, MPD, and BLB stopper had different disease severity ratings. Effects of EM on BLB did not significantly differ with the control
