Management effectiveness of protected areas in Indonesia

Indonesia is a mega-diverse country that makes it attractive for foreign support in protected areas. Over the past 10 years, funding for the Integrated Conservation and Development Projects (ICDP) alone grew from US$9,000 million to US$33,000 million. Yet, despite increasing financial support, parks and reserves continue to suffer from encroachment, poaching, and development intrusion. The question whether management effectiveness in protected areas (PAs) is achieved at the site level and cummulatively at national and international levels is the main question of this paper. It reviews effectiveness of management in PAs in Indonesia based from the sample of 14 out of 41 national parks. The assessment specifically focuses on the effectiveness of strategies employed in controlling illegal logging, forest fire, forest area encroachment, uncontrolled use of timber forest products, and illegal hunting
