Effect of seed rates on the growth and yield of canola varieties

The seed was sown in 45 cm apart rows, two varieties (Oscar and Rainbow) were experimented for five seed rates 2.50, 3.75. 5.00, 6.25 and 7.50 kg per hectare, in split plot design, in four replications. The plot size was maintained at 45 square meter. Fertilizer was applied at the rate of 75-50 kg NP per hectare. Maximum plant height (188.20 cm) was recorded in variety Rainbow as compared to Oscar (169.80 cm). In seed rates greater plant height (183 cm) was noticed under higher seeding rate of 7.50 kg per hectares. Mean days to flowering ranged from 68.50 to 71.39 under different seeding rates, being maximum (71.39) under 7.50 kg per hectare seed rate. In interaction variety Rainbow under 7.50 kg per hectare seed rate took maximum 73.33 days to flowering. Mean days to maturity ranged from 131.50 to 137.50 under different seeding rate of 7.50 kg per hectare. Rainbow variety under 7.50 kg per hectare seeding rate took maximum 140 days to maturity. Number of branches per plant ranged from 11.70 to 13.32 under different seed rates, being highest (13.32) in seed rate of 7.5 kg per hectare. Variety Oscar under 7.50 kg per hectare seeding rate had maximum (13.50) number of branches per plant. Number of pods per plant ranged from 240 to 270 per plant under the effect of different seed rates, highest (270) at a seeding rate of 7.5 kg per hectare. Variety Oscar X 6.25 kg per hectare seeding rate recorded greater number of pods (293). Seed yield per hectare ranged from 803.88 kg to 968.75 kg per hectare, under the effect of different seed rates, being maximum 968.75 kg per hectare under 7.50 kg per hectare seed rate. Variety Oscar X 7.50 kg seed rates produced higher seed Yield of 1092 kg per hectare. Results of analysis of variance reveal that increase in seeding rate upto 7.50 kg per hectare resulted in significant increase in seed yield.
