Status of NPK in soils at Quaid-e-Awam Research Institute district Larkana [Pakistan]

One hundred soil samples were secured from 50 sites at 0-15 and 15-30 cm depths. The soil samples were analyzed for NPK along with some physico- chemical properties. Among all soils samples clay was 60% clay loam (6%) silty clay loam 26, silty clay 6, and silty loam was 2% at surface of and 72% clay, clay loam 2%, silty clay loam 20% silty clay 4 and silty loam 2% at sub- surface of soil in texture. On average 96% soils were heavy and 4% medium in text at both depth. The electrical conductivity ranged from 0.29 to 2.40 dS/m in surface soil (0-15 cm) and 0.28 to 2.50 dS/m in sub-soils (15-30 cm). The soil pH values ranged from 7.50 to 8.25 in surface (0-15 cm) and 7.35 to 8.13 in sub- soil (15-30 cm). Soils were low in organic matter. It declaimed with depths and ranged between 0.744 to 1.0% in surface (0-15 cm) and 0.35 to 0.90% in sub-soils (15-30 cm). The over all average lime content for both the depths was 16.04%. Total nitrogen of soils ranged between 0.02 to 0.05% in surface and 0.018 to 0.045% in sub-soils. On all average values for surface and sub-surface were 0.037% and 0.033% respectively. AB-DTPA extractable P of the soils ranged from 3.2 to 8.2 mg/kg in surface and 2.0 to 4.2 mg/kg in sub- soils. On all average for surface and sub-soils were 4.48 mg/kg & 3.6 mg/kg P. AB-DTPA extractable K of soils ranged from 139.3 to 358.2 mg/kg in surface and 99.5 to 278.6 mg/kg in sub-surface soils. Over all average values for both surface soils and sub- soils were 213.5 mg/kg and 162.12 mg/kg. It is concluded soils of Quaid-e-Awam Research Institute Larkana, were low in organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus but adequate in AB-DTPA K. Therefore, it is suggested that proper application of NP fertilizers along with FYM (Farm Yard Manure) may be applied to meet requirements of rice crop for optimal production.
