Correlation studies between yield and important characters in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)
2002
Khatri, S.K.
In this research experiment simple correlation and regression analysis have been worked out for some quantitative characters between yield and its five (5) main contributing characters of six important commercial cultivars of Sindh i.e. ANMOL-9l, T.J-83, KIRAN-95, SARSABZ, JAUHAR-78 and SOGHAT-90. Varieties showed highly significant difference for plant height, days to maturity, number of grains per spike end grain yield per plant. The character number of tillers per plant and spike length indicates non-significant difference among the genotypes. Variety ANMOL-91 proved the best among the varieties in the grain yield per plant, number of tillers per plant. Where as it stood second in case of plant height, spike length and number of grains per spike. It out yielded and produced 15.18 grams grain yield per plant. KIRAN- 95 being the second most successful variety which produced 14.68 grams of grain yield per plant. SARSABZ 3rd successful variety produced 14.12 grams of grain yield per plant. More over JAUHAR-78 produced the tallest plants (94.05 cm ) produced lowest number of grains per spike and grain yield per plant. T.J-83 recorded the highest number of grains per spike 65.43. In case of plant height and grain yield per plant, significant positive association was found in all the wheat varieties except T. J-83. Highly significant positive inter relationships of number of tillers per plant and with the spike length per plant yield per plant in four varieties. Varieties T. J-83 and KIRAN-95 showed non-significant relationship between these two combinations. Significant and positive association at 1 percent level of significance between days to maturity and grain yield per plant in all the wheat varieties except ANMOL-91 and SOGHAT-90, which also produced positive relationships between these two characters but at 5 percent level of significance. In case of number of grains per spike and grain yield per plant, four varieties produced highly significant positive correlation. But SOGHAT-90, and produced JAUHAR-78 significant and positive association between these two characters at 5% level of significance. The results regarding genetic selection parameters indicates that the tillers per plant and number of grains per spike showed the highest heritability in broad sense coupled with the genotypes could be selected with respect to both the traits, while planing any hybridization programme for the improvement of wheat. Analysis of variance exhibited that all the varieties were found significantly different from each other in all the characters except two i.e. spike length and number of tillers per plant.
