Effect of crude powder as well as ethanolic extract of Ajuga bracteosa (Family lamiaceae) was examined on the serum T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxin) level in rabbits. Plant crude powder (2 gm/kg. body weight) and the extract (Igm/kg. body weight) were administered daily orally for a period of 4 days. Serum T3 and T4 were analyzed at 0, 4, 8, 24,48 and 96 hours. Serum T3 level showed a significant decrease (p 0.005) followed by an increase (p 0.005). Serum T4 showed a similar pattern as seen on the level of T3 exhibiting an initial decrease followed by a gradual recovery. These results indicate that Ajuga bracteosa has some inhibitory effect on the serum T3 and T4 level in rabbits and may be useful in normalizing thyroid function though, further detailed pre-clinical and clinical studies are needed.
