Five most promising varieties of oat viz. Fatua, S 81, PD2-LV65, Avon and Swan were evaluated for fodder yield, quality and seed yield under different cutting stages at the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), Islamabad during 1987-89. Significant differences were observed among years, cutting stages, varieties and cutting stage x variety interactions for all the traits studied. The highest mean green fodder and dry matter yields were produced by variety PD2-LV65 cut at 50% flowering stage for fodder. Similarly maximum mean crude protein and minimum crude fibre contents were recorded in PD2- LV65, which is the sign of best quality fodder. The highest mean seed yield was observed in PD2-LV65. It was concluded that cultivar PD2-LV65 harvested for fodder after 115 days of planting and then left for seed at maturity produced maximum fodder, seed yield and better fodder quality.
