The investigations of water chemistry were carried out monthly between March 1996 and March 1997, while surface sediment samples for carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus determinations were collected in June and October 1996 and March 1997. Studies were conducted between 10.9 and 336.7 km of the Vistula course, at 9 sampling sities. Concentrations of total carbon and nitrogen in sediment were the highest in areas close to industrial pollution sources, while the highest phosphorus content was found near urban agglomerations
