The municipal solid waste compost (MSWC): its importance to the Portuguese agriculture
2002
Santos, J.Q. dos
Organic matter, though not directly involved in plant nutrition, plays a decisive rule in the maintenance of soils fertility. The continental Portuguese soils, because of climatic conditions, are generally poor in organic matter. So, the use of organic fertilizers is recommended, especially when crops not incorporate significant amounts of residues into the soils. The production of MSWC in the country has been steadily increasing, and its application to the soils, as a mean of incorporate organic matter, constitutes an interesting alternative to mineral manure that tends to disappear. However, the agricultural use of these organic fertilisers demands an effective control, especially in what concerns its content in salts and heavy metals. So, the correct use of MSWC as organic fertilizers depends on crop and on the evaluation of its quality as well as on the evaluation of physical, economical and environmental conditions where they are going to be applied
