Preliminary results are presented concerning the characterisation and evaluation of the nutritional status of a young peach tree orchard (Prunus persica L. Batsch cv. 'Rich Lady'), under organic farming conditions. The orchard is located in southern Portugal, was planted in 2000 and is established in an alkaline, calcareous soil. Two different cultural practices were established in the second year of plantation: permanent vegetation and green manuring. The orchard was drip-irrigated during summer and liquid organic matter was applied. Chemical analysis of leaves and flowers was done during 2002 and 2003. In the same sampling dates, estimations of total leaf chlorophyll were made using the SPAD apparatus. Soil samples were also collected in two depths: 0-20 cm and 20-50 cm, and several chemical parameters were evaluated, namely: organic matter; C/n ratio; ECC; extractable K and P. The results are discussed based on cultural practices and the values are compared with those of conventional agriculture
