New technologies for modelling and prediction of water erosion. WEPP (Water Erosion Prediction Project) [Portugal]
2002
Coutinho, M.A. | Antunes, S.V.
The new tendencies in the modelling of the physical processes associated to water erosion are presented and a summary description of the new technologies associated with the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) is made. The main attributes of the different model's components are indicated and some focusing is done on the description of concepts and associated processes. It is emphasised that, although the model needs more data than other previous models, the greater discretization and the process' details allows an easy application and, the establishing of appropriate hypotheses for the missing information minimises also the risk of less accuracy and warrants better results than other available models. The sensitivity of major model's parameters is analysed regarding the hydro and sedimentological results. It is pointed out the advantage of using this model in detailed scales and complimentarily to other empirical models, which are more efficient at the planning level. An exemplification is made for the use of the WEPP in a slope at the Mitra's facilities of the Universidade de Evora, in simplified conditions, that although not translating completely the physical reality allows the understanding of the model potentials and sensitivity
