A multi-location field trial was conducted for two consecutive seasons (1999/2000 and 2000/2001) at five locations in the irrigated area of central Sudan to estimate genotype-environment interaction for yield, some yield components and some fibre quality characteristics in twelve cotton Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium barbadense genotypes. A randomized complete block design with five replications was used to conduct the trial. Highly significant differences for seed cotton yield, lint yield, number of bolls per plant, number of bolls per square metre, boll weight, seed cotton per plant seed index, lint index, 2.5; span length, micronaire value and bundle strength were detected among the tested genotypes. The presence of substantial genotype x location, genotype xseason and genotype x location x season interactions for all evaluated traits indicated that genotypes showed differential responses when grown in different environments. Hence, the need for multi-location testing for several years, in order to identify high yielding stable genotypes, is of paramount importance
