Marine capture fisheries of Thailand play an important role not only for domestic consumption but also for foreign exchange earnings, with annual production more than 2.7 million metric tons, valued $ 1.4 million. More than one thousand species of pelagic, demersal and invertebrate species are in the seabed area of 420,280 square km along the coasts of the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea. About 87 percent of fishermen are engaged in small scale fisheries and have exploited 13 percent of the total production. The fishing gears used in capturing marine resources are otterboard trawlers, pair trawlers, beam trawlers, purse seiners, push netters, light luring for fish and squid, clam dredge and other small scale fishing gears. The recent capture fisheries situation is almost overexploited with high level of current fishing effort. Recruitments of high value species were destroyed through their used of small mesh codend and small sieve size. The Department of Fisheries realizes the situation of the marine capture fisheries and has set up the improvement of the sea fisheries project under the 8th National Economic and Social Development Plan.
