Information on the use of natural rubber to encapsulate fertilizer containing nitrogen to control rate of nitrogen release in limited. In this study, the natural rubber encapsulated urea fertilizer was prepared by blending 100, 200 and 300 parts of urea with 100 parts of skim crepe rubber and vulcanizing chemicals in the Bambuary. The compound was extruded by using the hot feed extruder. The extrudate was then coated with the solution of 3 percent STR 5L in toluene. It was found that urea release in sand leaching with water in the form of natural rubber encapsulated urea fertilizer formula 1, 2 and 3 that is, the 100 phr, 200 phr and 300 phr has the miximum rate of 2.58, 3.13 and 1.16 percent/hour at 27, 21 and 15 hours, respectively, while that of the pure ureas was 12.18 percent/hour at 4.5 hours. The number of layers of coating also had an effect on nitrogen release rate: the maximum rate of releasing nitrogen of natural rubber formulae 3 with 1 layer coating was 3.86 percent/hour at 9 hours while that with 2 and 3 layers coating was 2.51 and 2.19 percent/hour within nearly 15 hours each. The samples prepared by vulcanization at 0, 10, 20 and 40 minutes showed that the maximum rate was 8.71, 8.20, 7.02 and 8.19 percent/hour for 3-6 hours.
