Status of special use forests of the Central North and the measures to be taken for biodiversity conservation

The Central North or Truongson North, transitional area between North-west and South parts of Vietnam Central, comprising 17 special use forests, is noted for its abundance in fauna and flora. Among the 5 wild life species newly discovered in Vietnam 4 species were found in Central North. Some protected areas of Central North become high ranking nature reserve for the whole country, such as Pumat, Vuquang... However deforestation and forest degradation in this region have not been diminished during the last years. Forest protection and management, according to the critical remarks of the paper author, have many weaknesses. Some measures for improving the situation are recommended.
